High Oil Prices Pressure Markets 27/07/2026

HOT stories for today

Market wrap:

  • US stocks ended mixed on Friday as investors weighed signs of possible diplomatic progress in the Middle East against continued uncertainty over whether the US could escalate its attacks on Iran. The S&P 500 edged up 0.05% to 7,411.98, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6% to 24,975.82. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 236 points, or 0.5%, to close at 51,947.25, supported by a 3.5% rise in Apple (AAPL). Stocks had traded higher earlier in the session after Reuters reported that Pakistan was considering a new path toward peace negotiations between the US and Iran, with China helping drive the initiative. However, the report also noted that significant obstacles to talks remain. Sentiment weakened later after The New York Times reported that President Donald Trump was meeting with senior advisers and cabinet officials to decide whether to intensify US military action against Iran. Traders appeared reluctant to carry significant risk into a weekend that could bring further escalation.
  • Oil prices pulled back sharply but recovered from their session lows following the report. Brent crude, which had climbed above $100 a barrel earlier in the week, fell nearly 4% to settle at $96.78. West Texas Intermediate declined 3% to $89.31 a barrel. Intel (INTC) dropped nearly 8%, reversing earlier gains despite reporting stronger-than-expected second-quarter results. For the week, the S&P 500 fell 0.6% and the Nasdaq lost 2.1%, marking a second consecutive weekly decline for both indexes. The Dow slipped 0.4%, extending its losing streak to three weeks. The economic calendar becomes significantly busier next week, with Wednesday’s Federal Reserve interest-rate decision taking center stage. Earnings season also continues with major reports from Visa (V), Coca-Cola (KO), Microsoft (MSFT), Boeing (BA), Meta Platforms (META) and several other large companies.

Fed decision surrounded by unusual uncertainty

  • Attention is shifting to next week's Federal Reserve meeting, where policymakers face one of the most uncertain interest-rate decisions in years. Markets currently assign roughly a one-in-three chance of a rate hike in July, while most economists still expect the Fed to keep rates unchanged until at least September. The uncertainty reflects the leadership of new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who has offered few clues about his policy stance. Unlike previous Fed chairs, Warsh has allowed markets to focus more closely on the views of the committee's 12 voting members rather than signaling a clear path himself.
  • Fed officials remain divided. Some policymakers argue that persistent inflation and higher oil prices justify another rate increase, while others prefer to wait for more economic data before tightening policy further. Analysts expect the meeting to feature the first meaningful disagreements since Warsh took office. The Fed announces its decision on Wednesday, followed by Warsh's first major post-meeting press conference. Investors will closely watch both the rate decision and any guidance on inflation, economic growth and the outlook for future policy moves.
