Earnings Rush Builds With Boeing on Deck 27/01/2026

HOT stories for today

Market wrap:

  • U.S. stocks rose Monday as investors tracked fast-moving political headlines and braced for a heavy week of megacap earnings and the Federal Reserve’s rate decision. The S&P 500 gained 0.5%, the Dow added about 314 points, or 0.6%, and the Nasdaq climbed 0.4%, lifted by advances in Apple, Meta and Microsoft ahead of their reports. President Donald Trump over the weekend threatened a 100% tariff on Canadian imports if Ottawa pursues a trade deal with China. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada has “no intention” of seeking a free-trade pact with Beijing. “The situation remains very fluid,” said Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge, adding that repeated tariff threats are gradually weighing on sentiment. In Washington, renewed shutdown worries surfaced as Democrats objected to a $1.2 trillion funding package that includes funding for Homeland Security, though a person familiar with GOP leadership said the DHS money would remain. Gold climbed to a record above $5,100 an ounce as investors sought havens. The Fed decides Wednesday, with rates expected to hold steady, while traders look for clues on the timing of cuts. Stocks are coming off a second straight weekly decline for the S&P 500.

AI Boom Extends Memory Chip Crunch to 2027

  • Memory chips, critical for smartphones and PCs and increasingly for AI data centers, are likely to remain tight and pricey through 2027 as the AI infrastructure boom consumes most available supply, especially high-bandwidth memory. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi told CNBC the chip “crunch” will run through 2026 and 2027, with production from leaders Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron flowing to AI builds, leaving other markets “starved” of capacity.
  • Even with expansion plans, he said it takes at least two years for new output to come online. Lenovo CFO Winston Cheng also expects prices to rise and said the company can pass through higher costs, while Xiaomi has warned phone prices could increase in 2026, though Ghazi said hikes are already underway. Sector view: the backdrop remains favorable for memory producers in the medium term; tight supply, along with AI-driven demand, underpins pricing power and earnings. The key risk is the industry’s tendency to overbuild once profits surge, but longer lead times and the HBM bottleneck suggest this upswing could last longer than a typical cycle.

Stocks on the move:

  • GameStop (GME): Michael Burry, the investor known for betting against the U.S. housing market ahead of the financial crisis, said he’s been buying shares of the former meme favorite, lifting the stock nearly 7%. In a Substack post, Burry said he isn’t banking on a short squeeze to “realize long-term value.”
  • USA Rare Earth (USAR): The miner jumped 15% after the Trump administration took a stake. The company said it will issue 16.1 million common shares and 17.6 million warrants.
  • Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT): Shares surged 10% after a three-year Elevidys study showed “clinically meaningful and durable efficacy” across key motor-function measures. All Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients in the study remained ambulatory, while the control group showed the expected declines.
  • Hecla Mining (HL): The stock rose more than 5.5% after the company reported 2025 silver production of 17 million ounces, the top end of its guidance. Gold output also beat guidance.
  • AppLovin (APP): The mobile advertising company gained more than 3% after Needham upgraded the stock to buy from hold and set a $700 price target, implying about 25% upside from Friday’s close.
